I am so excited to be working with your child. I am anticipating a wonderful school year ahead of us. You are always welcome to come and help. You’ve heard it said before, “It takes a village to raise a child”. I truly believe this. Together we can make your child’s school a wonderful experience.
Lunch: Your child has the option of bringing a cold lunch or purchasing a hot lunch for $3.25. If you are planning to purchase lunch for your child, you may want to consider prepaying lunches ahead of time. You can do this online. You will need your child’s id number, which you can get from either the office or me. If you do send cash, please enclose it in a sealed envelope or zip lock bag with your child’s name and amount written on the outside. Students will keep it in their pencil box until it is time to go to lunch.
Snack/Breakfast: In second grade, students are to bring their own individual snacks for recess. Please remember to send them with a healthy snack. Students also have the option of purchasing breakfast for $1.75 during recess. More details about the program will be sent home in the Thursday envelope.
Thursday Envelope & Blue Folder: Every Thursday, your child will bring home a weekly white envelope and blue folder. The envelope will contain notices from the office and/or from me. The weekly blue folder will contain some of your child’s completed work with comments from me. I will be writing a very brief note on how your child is doing or simply draw a happy face if all is going well. You can write notes in the comment section, as well. This is just one way I like to communicate with my parents. Please check these every Thursday, initial it, and return the empty envelope and folder the following day. It is very important that these two items get returned every Friday. This insures good communication between home and school.
Homework: A packet will be sent home on Mondays and due back at the end of each week. Packets that are not signed by the parent will be considered incomplete and returned to be signed. Students will also be bring home a writing journal on Mondays that is due back on Wednesdays.
Parent Helpers: Our programs here would be nothing without the help and support of our families. The more help we have, the more we can accomplish. You can sign up to volunteer for different things by completing the parent Contact Information form that is on the home page of this website.
Wish List: I will periodically be sending a wish list through Sign-up Genius as we begin to run low on supplies.
School Supplies: All basic school supplies are provided. However, I am asking students to bring a few things. Every student will need a ½ inch binder with an outside clear view pocket sleeve, a yellow highlighter, a pocket folder, and headphones to use with their i-Pads and chrome books. I have found that headphones work better than earbuds. Although earbuds are nice and small they get tangled easily making it harder for the children to work with.
Labels: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE label everything your child brings to school with his or her name. Every lunch bag should have the first and last name written on the outside. Sweaters, jackets, and hats should have names on them, as well. It is amazing how many things end up in the lost and found.
Shoes: We do PE daily so it is very important students wear shoes that they can run in. Please make sure your child is wearing shoes that do not slip off.
Student Teachers: We are very fortunate to have a student teacher, Mrs. Nina Hokeness, working in our class this year from Santa Clara University. She will spend half the year with me and the other half with Miss. Heacock in fourth grade. I have been working closely with Santa Clara University for the past 6 years helping train new teachers. This is wonderful because not only do they learn the ins and outs of teaching, but the children have another extra adult to help in the classroom. We have been very fortunate to get the best in the past and I am confident that she will live up to my expectations.
Communication: The best way to communicate with me is through e-mail. I check my e-mail frequently. If you need to call, leave a message and I will return your call within 24 hours. You can always write a note in the Thursday Blue folder, as well. If you need to discuss anything with me, please check in with me at the end of the school day. It is too difficult to hold a conversation with an adult in the morning when I have a whole bunch of little bodies waiting for my attention.
I am very excited to work with you and your children this year. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need to discuss anything. I try really hard to have an open classroom and I welcome all my parents to come and help.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Chitwood
